7.2
Overall score

The Italian side of the Alps has a rawness and drama that sets it apart. The Stelvio — with 48 switchbacks and a summit at 2,758m — is the ultimate bucket-list climb. The Mortirolo is brutally steep and largely forgotten by the outside world. Lake Como's Ghisallo is a shrine. The Aosta Valley and the Lombard lakes district add variety. Italian roads are less polished than Switzerland or France, but the riding is more visceral, the food is better, and the passion for cycling is in the blood.
